Asset Recovery: Why Strategy Matters More Than Speed

When assets have been stolen, hidden, misappropriated or become trapped in complex legal and corporate structures, the instinct is often to act quickly. While urgency is important, successful asset recovery is rarely achieved through speed alone. The most effective recoveries are built on strategy, intelligence and disciplined execution.

One of the most common mistakes made by claimants is pursuing litigation before fully understanding where assets are located, who controls them and what leverage points exist. Legal action can be a powerful tool, but it should form part of a wider recovery strategy rather than being the strategy itself.

The right path begins with understanding the asset landscape. This means identifying assets, mapping ownership structures, analysing financial flows and assessing the individuals, institutions and jurisdictions involved. Effective intelligence gathering allows recovery professionals to distinguish between assets that exist on paper and assets that can realistically be recovered.

Once the facts are established, a tailored recovery strategy can be developed. This may involve negotiations, commercial settlements, regulatory engagement, insolvency proceedings, litigation support, enforcement actions or a combination of several approaches. Every case is different, and the most successful recoveries are those that remain flexible as new information emerges.

Importantly, recovery should not be viewed as ending when an asset is located or even when it is secured. Recovered assets often require management, restructuring, disposal or investment to maximise their value. A successful recovery programme therefore focuses not only on obtaining control of an asset but on delivering the strongest possible financial outcome for the client.

At TKG, we believe asset recovery is a process rather than an event. By combining intelligence, investigations, strategic planning, stakeholder engagement and recovery management, we help clients navigate complex disputes and achieve practical, commercially focused results.

The objective is simple: identify value, create leverage and recover assets in the most effective way possible.
